Season 1 – Trailer

In season 1, we read selections from Cobwebs From an Empty Skull by Ambrose Bierce.   This trailer previews our first season, and includes the reading the preface of Cobwebs From an Empty Skull.

Ambrose Bierce was a solider in the Civil War, and then went on to become a writer and journalist.  He was a contributor and editor for a number of newspapers in San Francisco during the later part of the 1800s.  He’s probably best know for the short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” which has been cited as an influence for numerous other works of film and literature.

In 1913 at age 71, he went to Mexico and joined up with Pancho Villa’s army as an observer during the Mexican Revolution; where after he disappeared, with no one really know what happened to him.

For me, I think that the wit of Bierce still holds up today.  Cobwebs from an Empty Skull is is one of the few books that I’ve read that actually caused me to laugh out loud.  So that;s why I choose selections from this book to read from for this first season of The Bookshelf Podcast.

Bierce lived in England from 1872 to 1875, and did some writing for Fun magazine.    Cobwebs from an Empty Skull is a collection of columns and stories published in Fun.
